Said to be the crown jewel of the classical ballet repertoire, Tchaivosky's The Sleeping Beauty is coming to The Center! Adapted from the original ballet by Marius Petipa, The Sleeping Beauty features over 60 Bartlesville Civic Ballet dancers and local community members in addition to four professional ballet dancers.
As part of an elaborate christening, The Lilac Fairy, godmother to the Princess Aurora, and her entourage of fairies present their dancing gifts of beauty, grace, wit, generosity, melodious voice and temperament to the newborn princess. The evil fairy, Carabosse, in a rage over not receiving an invitation to the Christening, casts an evil curse on the baby. At 16 years of age the princess will prick her finger with a spindle and die. The Lilac Fairy tempers her curse by saying she will not die, but fall into a deep sleep, to be awakened in 100 years by a handsome prince. Out of fear, the King issues a ban on all spindles in the Kingdom.
As the story goes, Princess Aurora does prick her finger on her 16th birthday, despite the ban. The Lilac Fairy casts a century-long spell of sleep on the castle. After 100 years, Prince Désiré, falls in love with the beautiful Princess Aurora, and the spell is broken with a kiss.
Princess Aurora and Prince Désiré's wedding is a grand celebration featuring fairy tale guests, such as Puss-in-Boots and White Cat, Red-Riding-Hood and the Wolf, Princess Florine and Bluebird, the Lilac Fairy and others who present their stories as gifts to the royal couple.
